Industrialists Task Jonathan On 2nd Niger Bridge

Ahead of President Goodluck Jonathan’s one-day visit to Anambra State on Friday, industrialists in Onitsha Industrial Layout, weekend, called on the president to expedite action on the proposed second Niger Bridge and the provision of internal Dry Port in Onitsha, to boost industrialisation of the commercial city.

Speaking to newsmen on behalf of industrialists in the area, Managing Director of Krisoral and Company Limited, Chief Chris Chidume, whose company is expected to be commissioned on Friday by the President, said there was the need for the second Niger Bridge if the industrial sector in Anambra State must function properly and contribute to the economic development of the country.

He also said that the provision of an internal dry port in Onitsha would, to a greater extent, alleviate the problem of industrialists in the South East and South South in clearing their  consignments and reduce the pressure at the Lagos ports.

He said: “We ask Mr President to see the need for the second Niger Bridge. The Niger Bridge as it is today services the entire South Eastern states and the South-South  states. I know the government can do it if they show the will.”

He said the internal dry port, if sited in Onitsha, would not only save the life span of the road from Lagos to the East as a result of the heavy trucks that ply it but would reduce the pressure at the Lagos wharf as industrialists would be clearing their consignments in Onitsha.

Aside that, Chiidume said the industrialists were hopeful that the President”s visit would be a morale booster to industrialization and entrepreneurship in Anambra state, noting that it would also facilitate and expedite the process of providing steady energy supply in not only the industrial lay out but the entire state.

He said the reason why most manufacturing companies in the country were fast closing down was because of lack of skilled manpower and advised that government should take up entrepreneurial studies as a discipline the youths should study while in schools.

“I would advise government to go back to catch them (youths) young to orientate them and to indoctrinate them to see the need for having a kind of social knowledge and social life.
