Suspected robbers on Wednesday evening opened fire on a vehicle conveying salaries of workers of Gulani local government, killing three soldiers escorting the bus, as well as the accountant of the local government.
One other soldier and a policeman were killed in the assault.
Confirming the incident to Daily Trust, Yobe police commissioner Patrick Egbuniwe said the incident happened at around 5:40pm.
Sources told Daily Trust that the monthly salaries for the local government workers is usually over N35 million.
The vehicle had been conveying the money from Gashua local government - one of the cosmopolitan centres of the state - and were ambushed as they arrived at the entrance to Gulani.
The accountant's name was given as Ali Lawan Dachia.
Snatching of local government workers' salaries has become a common place occurence in the state.
In April, a team of gunmen snatched salaries of workers of Potiskum local government while payment was going on. In July, another attack saw gunmen cart away the salaries of primary school teachers belonging to Gujba local government area.
In neighbouring Borno state, gunmen killed a policeman and three council workers before carting away salaries of Shani local government workers in July. In June, two soldiers and the council cashier of Guzamala local government area were killed and all the salaries of the council workers carted away. Similar robberies had also taken place in Jere and Kala-Balge local government areas earlier in the year.
