Residents Face Water Crisis As They Discover Kerosene In Their Wells 4 years ago 1

Residents of Gbaremu community in Ona Ara Local Government Area of Oyo State are currently facing a water crisis as three of the few wells in the community have been polluted by fuel.

On Saturday, when our correspondent visited the community, the residents said they could not explain where the fuel which seeped into the wells came from.

The three wells, all on Ifewunmi Street, had been locked up while the residents complained that they were in dire need of alternative water supply. The residents of the houses where the wells are located said after they reported the discovery, operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offence Commission ordered them not to use the wells.

The owner of one of the wells, Alhaji Folagbade Belau, said they discovered the fuel, suspected to be kerosene, in the well last Tuesday. Belau said, “Somebody went to the well to fetch water and raised the alarm that there was fuel in it. We tested it by dipping a stick into it and burning it. It was kerosene. We don’t know what to do now.”

One of Belau’s tenants, Alhaji Rafiu Odeyemi, hinted that some people had started using the fuel to cook, but were stopped by the ICPC operatives, who locked the well. He said, “The problem we are facing right now is where to get water. A lot of households depend on this particular well. And we have been ordered not to use it.

Many other residents of the community, who spoke with PUNCH Metro, indicated that water supply was a problem in the community and the discovery would greatly affect their livelihood. Our correspondent noticed that the substance, which is still visible on the edge of the well actually smelt like kerosene. Home Page
