Group Carpets Minister On Nigeria’s Religious Status

Kaduna-based Christian group, the Christian Awareness Initiative of Nigeria, on Thursday berated the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed Nurudeen, who was quoted to have said Muslims out-number Christians in the country.

The group, in a statement by its coordinator, Pastor Caleb Ma’aji, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the minister.

The statement read in part, “CHAIN makes bold to say that not only is this inciteful statement untrue, seeing as Nigeria is not an Islamic nation and can never be. We also declare that Dr. Mohammed Nurudeen is unfit to be a member of the Federal Executive Council in a multi-religious and heterogenous secular nation as Nigeria. We hereby call on the President to sanction him and show him the door out of his cabinet.

“CHAIN recalls that it is comments such as Nurudeen’s that has brought Nigeria to the edge and emboldened hate and terror groups to carry out their activities in the name of Islam. People like the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs feed terror because their words serve the philosophy of hatred that is currently ravaging northern Nigeria.

“We are still seeing the reverberations of this extremist action, which has given this undiplomatic minister the guts to describe a nation whose constitution enshrines secularity as an Islamic nation. This is because those in authority have refused to caution people who use Islam as a political shield.

“Such laxity is what has emboldened the Islamic terrorist group, Boko Haram, to insist that there will be no peace in Nigeria till Nigerians accept Islam.”
