ACN Angry Over Iweka Road In Onitsha Renamed After Ojukwu

The Action Congress of Nigeria has criticised the renaming of the popular Iweka Road in Onitsha after the late Biafran leader, Chief Chukwuemeka Odimegwu-Ojukwu by the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi.

In a statement on Thursday, the state Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Mr. Okelo Madukaife, said the renaming of the street was a dishonor to the late Eze Iweka, who the street was named after.

Madukaife said since Iweka was a traditional ruler, who contributed immensely to the development of Onitsha, it would be humiliating for the state government to dishonor him by renaming a street previously named after him.

He said there were many other monuments like the teaching hospital and the stadium, that could bear the name of Ojukwu.

He said, “The proposal of the outgoing Anambra State Government led by Peter Obi to de-honour an ancestral royal father, illustrious son of Anambra State, and prime mover of the development of Onitsha in order to honour Ojukwu, our own Ikemba, the legend, is tantamount to ridiculing two Anambra icons and honouring none, because it can generate altercations between individuals, families and communities that will erase any honour, if truly intended.

“It is an established fact that Ojukwu’s name is larger-than- life in Anambra, Eastern Nigeria, Nigeria and the World and it takes landmark physical structures to honour such figures.

“The ACN dissociates itself from this self-serving move and urges the government to retrace its steps, be more imaginative and take steps to respect, Ezeigbo GburuGburu rather than destroy another name to mock Ikemba.

“In the same breadth, we condemn in the strongest terms the idea of continuing to honour persons by placing their names on public facilities without public hearing, because that is the opportunity to throw up all claims and objections.”
