The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties has applauded Sunday’s joint statement of former Heads of State Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babaginda, decrying the security challenges facing the country.
The CNPP on Monday, described the statement as “noble, patriotic and clearly a passionate concern”, which must be matched with action.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the group, however, called on the former Presidents to fast-track intensive community involvement by returning the money allegedly stolen under their watch.
The statement read, “It is our candid view that if the billions of dollars siphoned during the Gulf War oil windfall under Babaginda’s watch and billions of dollars fleeced off under Obasanjo’s watch are returned to the Federation Account, they will be enough to fully engage millions of unemployed youths.
“It is indisputable that the monies stolen under the two regimes are more than enough to complete the Mambilla Hydro-Power Plant, Kano-Lagos and Maiduguri-Port Harcourt Modern Rail lines and two refineries of 500,000 barrels per day capacity.”
