Making Jonathan's Concession A Heroic Feature Is A Misplaced Priority - Group

A civil society group called the Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People (CDRP) has described the praise for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for conceding defeat to the president-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, in the recent presidential election as a misplaced priority.

According to Daily Independent, the group in a statement issued and signed by its acting national coordinator, Comrade Waheed Saka, said that the commendation messages about President Goodluck Jonathan's decision to concede defeat are unnecessary and unwarranted.

It also descibed it as parochial in nature because it is normal that in such an election definitely one person will be victorious while another will lose.

Saka, who also doubles as the Osun state coordinator of Nigerians United for Democracy (NUD), said that the concession speech and calling of the president-elect by President Goodluck Jonathan is definitely symbolic but not extraordinary; indeed it was very natural in the face of the silent revolution across the country.

He said that making President Jonathan's concession a heroic feat is not only a disservice to Nigerians' collective psyche but also to the memory of victims of Jonathan administration.

"It is misplaced, parochial and opportunistic; it is like making a hero out of a villain and a genius out of a mediocre!" the statement read.

The group insisted that the gain of a democratic transition cannot qualify as relief for the pains and pangs inflicted on the citizens of the country in the past six years through the insensitivity, corruption and overall maladministration of the Jonathan regime.

“The call from certain cliché seeking for Nobel Peace prize for President Goodluck Jonathan is laughable and condemnable, how can you situate the demand for Nobel Prize for a president that is divisive in fact and in deed?

How can you call a president that presided over the most corrupt regime in the history of our nation a hero? Subsidy scam; pension scam; NIS Scam; Bullet proof car scandal; missing $20bn and many other scam too numerous to mention? In fact, President Jonathan is no hero, he is just the outgoing President of Nigeria." Saka said.

Meanwhile the Emir of Kano, Lamido Muhammad Sanusi II, stated that President Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential election because of the mood of voters which was determined by the economic conditions and level of poverty across the country.
