Members of the Ughelli Vigilance group have apprehended one suspected kidnapper identified as Johnny Edah who was hidding in a bush between Orogun and Abraka, Delta State.
The team recovered a laptop and handset of a lecturer in the Department of Medicine in the Delta State University, Abraka, Dr Jonathan Ethewumi, who had escaped from his kidnappers’ den before the vigilance group stormed the hideout.
Two other lecturers of the same university in the departments of Mathematics and Economics, Dr Itsegbemi and Dr Elele Efe respectively were Wednesday set free by their kidnappers.
Saturday Vanguard also gathered that the Medical Director of Abraka General Hospital, Dr Charles Ojuma, who was among those kidnapped in the university community in the last five days, escaped from the hands of his kidnappers just as Doctors in the State, Tuesday down tools in protest of the spate of kidnapping of their colleagues in the State. Chairman of the Ughelli Vigilance group, Mr Monday Ohwesiri while speaking with newsmen in the early hours of yesterday, said they were alerted by members of the Abraka Vigilance team of the developments in Abraka town.
He said they immediately swung into action after alerting members of the JTF in Ughelli and other security agents, adding that; “yesterday (Wednesday) night we went on the rescue mission.”
“We arrested one of the suspected kidnappers, who gave his name as Johnny Edah in their hideout in a bush between Orogun and Abraka.”
Confirming the arrest, the State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Charles Muka said the suspect, Johnny Edah was being questioned, adding that one laptop and handset belonging to a lecturer was recovered.
He said the recovered item was helping the police in its investigation.
Meanwhile, a suspected cultist identified as Mr. Oremi was burnt to death by members of another Vigilance Group, in Udu Local Government Area, Delta state.
The suspected cultist was apprehended at Emedjor street, Ovwian while allegedly snatching phones from unsuspecting persons in the area. Saturday Vanguard gathered that luck ran out of the suspect as he and other members of his gang were chased by the vigilante members.
According to a dependable source, the suspect was apprehended by a 16 years old boy (names withheld) and handed over to the vigilance group members who were closely chasing him. We gathered that the said Mr. Oremi was among those suspected to have killed one Mr. Aboy, member of a rival cult group in the area at Orhuwhorun junction some weeks ago.
