The Niger state House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Alhaji Mohammed Tsowa, and voted in Honourable Isah Kawo representing Bida 1 as the new Speaker.
The Deputy Speaker, Honourable Ahmed Bello of Agwara constituency was also impeached.
The motion for impeachment was moved by Honourable Isah Lokogama and a majority of 20 members, out of the 27–member House of Assembly signed the impeachment notice on Tuesday.
The lawmakers accused the former leadership of the house of engaging in acts that is not in the best interest of the house.
In a unanimous decision, the house immediately elected Honourable Isah Kawo as the new speaker.
Mr Kawo has been a member of the house since 2003.
Speaking to Channels Television after his election the new speaker, Mr Kawo said “the need to move the House forward coupled with the fact that a lot of the members of the house were not pleased with the former speaker necessitated the change of the leadership of the house.”
The new Speaker promised to provide a forward looking and purposeful leadership for the state house of assembly.
