Two male passengers on Wednesday died in an accident when a vehicle in which they were traveling lost control and hit a palm tree.
The vehicle, a Volvo car with number plate AE 207 ABK was heading for Port Harcourt when the driver lost control and hit a palm tree at Ibekwe Akpanyak, an area between 42 Junction and Ikot Ebak in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
One of the survivors, Abigael Udofia, said the driver ignored all their warnings against over speeding.
She said, “When we noticed that the speed on which the driver was driving was terrible, we asked him to reduce it, but he ignored us.
“He said he would not reduce the speed because of the distance we were going and the need for him to return to Akwa Ibom the same day.”
It was learnt that the driver was severely injured on his legs.
Other seven passengers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. However, an 18-month-old Esther Godwin was not injured.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Etim Dickson, who confirmed the incident, warned drivers against over speeding.
Dickson advised passengers to be vigilant whenever they boarded a vehicle and constantly check drivers who over speed and ignore road signs.
He said, “I will get in touch with our men to evacuate the victims to hospital. Many of the accidents on our roads are preventable if drivers keep to speed limit.”
