Bandwidth: NigComSat Links Up Main One 4 years ago 6


The Nigerian Communications Satellite Company Ltd, NigComSat, may have provided part of the solutions to the lingering last mile problem that has slowed down the country’s broadband growth, when it last week partnered Main One Cable Company to provide access to rural dwellers.

The partnership saw to the launch of a Teleport by the duo at the premises of Main One Cable in Lekki, Lagos. The hub is expected to significantly reduce the dearth of bandwidth in rural areas, as well as providing services to the un-served and underserved areas in West Africa and other African countries, where NigComSat-1R has footprints.

Apart from the benefits already enumerated, he partnership will augment capacity building in the information and communications technology (ICT) industry and also lead to a major crash in the cost of bandwidth which has been on the high side.

Main One Cable and NIGCOMSAT, at the launch, promised to serve their customers seamlessly. NIGCOMSAT is expected to carry traffic from the Teleport to far flung places where cable cannot get, via satellite.

Speaking at the launch, Chairman of Nigcomsat board, Prof. Turner Isoun noted that the partnership was a win- win situation for both Companies, the end-users and the country.

Isoun, who led a delegation of some Board members including Mr. Olabode Oroge and Miss Alma Udoyen, said the deal was a breakthrough for the country as the relationship will greatly enhance access to the internet via broadband and create dividends of democracy for the people.

Also, Chief Executive Officer of Main One Cable, Ms. Funke Opeke agreed with Isoun that the relationship will lead to a significant price crash, adding that “to the benefit of our end-users especially those in the last mile domain which cable can hardly reach, this partnership is very significant.”

The hub consists of two satellite dishes, a major 6.3 metre hub able to transmit information to locations across Nigeria and another smaller dish, which serves as a tracking antenna to keep the hub aligned with the satellite. Home Page
