Policemen from Utako Division Sunday evening arrested seven suspected park touts, who parade themselves as transport union members in order to harass and rob innocent motorists.
Divisional Police Officer, Chief Superintendent Usman K. Umar, said following many distress calls from members of the public on Sunday near Jabi Park about touts molesting car users, impounding their vehicles, forcefully removing vehicle plate numbers, extorting money from motorists and seizing car keys.
He said the police had held series of meetings with executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NUTRW), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and Unpainted Car Association about the need to chase away criminals who claim to be members of their unions.
“The hoodlums on sighting us used dangerous weapons to attack police officers but we were not forceful to avoid injuring innocent people,” he stated. The divisional police officer said seven suspects were arrested with various items.
One of the victims, Lawal Ifeoluwa, a desktop support analyst, said he parked by the roadside to answer a call from his mobile phone and over 15 suspected touts pounced on him. He said the touts insulted and tried to beat his friend and himself before his friend called the police and they responded immediately.
