Nigerian basketball player, Chamberlain “Champ” Oguchi said he and his teammates are not in London 2012 to make up the numbers.
Oguchi who arrived the Games Village on Monday stated that the team was in high spirits and they ready to prove that their qualification for the Olympics was not a fluke. “Our goal is to place, not just compete,” said Oguchi. “We’ve already proven we can compete with some of the top teams in the world such as Greece and Lithuania. Now that we know that, and the rest of the world knows that, we expect nothing less. We want to establish ourselves as one of the top teams in the world.”
D’ Tigers are making their Olympic debut. They will play their first game against Tunisia on Sunday. Oguchi who was sidelined by an injury during the qualifiers declared that he was looking forward to the games, most especially the one against the USA all star Dream Team on August 2.
“Just to be on the floor with those guys I grew up admiring, guys like Carmelo (Anthony), LeBron (James), Kobe (Bryant), Deron Williams will mean a lot to me,” said Oguchi. “But I can’t think about that in the game. Before and after the game is when it’s going sink in that I’m going against some of the best talent in the world.”
These Tigers ‘ll injure teams — Gbiri
The presence of Nigeria’s male Basketball team, D Tigers at the Olympics is still causing ripples with the scribe of Nigerian Basketball Federation, Francis Gbiri who is vowing that the Tigers will ‘injure’ teams here. ‘’WE are not here by mistake. We are here because we merit to be at the Olympics. We are here because the players gave their all to be here. We are here because of the doggedness of the President, Tijani Umar.
And now that we are here, there is not going to be stopping the D’Tigers. They are going to cause upsets. Mark my words”, Gbiri said.
