Why PDP governors reconciled with Tukur
More facts have emerged over the reported reconciliation between the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and governors elected on the platform of the party.
Details of the deal between the party and its caucus in the House of Representatives have also surfaced.
Findings by the Nigerian Tribune showed that the governors backed down from their push against the party chairman for five major reasons.
The first reason, according to sources at the marathon meeting held at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s Logde, Abuja, was that the party chairman made concessions, especially over the phase of the reform he was implementing within the party. The reform was opposed to by many governors, who interpreted it as an attempt to whittle down their control over the party. Tukur was said to have agreed to stop further reform efforts until communication lines had been established between the party and its various caucuses.
The second reason, according to findings, was that the meeting, which was also attended by the national deputy chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus, reviewed the mounting challenges facing the party and the president and concluded that removing the chairman would only complicate matters for the party.
Investigations also revealed that the governors were shocked by reports that the two governors, who stayed back after the G5 defection, were allegedly acting as moles within the party, as they feared internal implosion.
It was also gathered that President Jonathan was reluctant to drop Tukur, especially as he was reportedly not convinced that the embattled national chairman was responsible for the woes of the party.
Meanwhile,the party has reached a three-point deal with its caucus in the House of Representatives, to stem further defection which may confer two-third majority to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lower chamber.
“The lawmakers also ask for protection and continued engagement by the party and the presidency.”
On the Speaker, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, the official said the party had placed him on watch list, noting that “for now, we regard him as our member until we have direct evidence or he openly defects.”
