There was pandamonium yesterday in Owerri, Imo State capital when a truck load of policemen stormed No. 33 Ekeonunwa Street and exhumed the remains of a woman buried some two years ago.
The inhabitants of the area took to their heels when the truck conveying the policemen to the area stopped and followed by the shooting of teargas cannisters, possibly to prevent people from coming near the place.
Reports reaching ThisDay said as soon as the police arrived the scene, they threw tear gas into the air to create panic among the people.
This was done possibly to prevent the people trooping to the area to notice what they were doing. ThisDay could not confirm why the police took the action as at the time of filing this report, but it was reliably gathered that exhuming the dead woman may have been done based on the order of the court.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Vitalis Anugu, confirmed the incident on telepone but did not share light on the matter. Residents of the area are still under shock and those who took to their heels are yet to return.
