Yesterday's Champions League clash Chelsea vs Sporting Lisbon became a defining point for the Nigerian star player John Mikel Obi.

The December 10 game at Stamford Bridge ended in 3-1 victory of Mourinho's men, with two other brilliant goals by Cesc Fabregas, who opened the score, and Andre Schurrle, who added a second, Goal recalls.

Having been harshly criticized last weekend following the Blues' loss in the match with Newcastle, the Nigerian midfielder scored his first ever Champions League goal for Chelsea after 58 appearances, The Nation recalls.

Five minutes into the second half, Sporting clawed a goal back through Jonathan Silva, but Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points.

According to Daily Mail, this was Mikel's 5th goal in more than 8 years at the club.

Thus, Chelsea and Schalke qualify to the knock out round from Group G in the Champions League after both side's victory.

After the win, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports when asked if he could lead his team to victory in the tournament:

"Let's see. We were close and we didn't have the team playing such a high level as we have this season, so we can dream a bit, but lets see if the sharks let us do that, because there are a few sharks in the ocean."
