The Senate Committee on Education yesterday ordered the authorities of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, to, within the next two weeks, furnish it with the financial implications of the proposed name change.
The committee, which visited the university yesterday for what it called oversight function, took up the institution’s management on various issues such as its finances, curriculum, internally generated revenue, IGR, and facilities’ maintenance, among others.
According to the Chairman of the committee, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, the Senate derives its mandate to query the conduct of affairs of any ministry, government’s department or agency that is charged with the responsibilities of executing laws enacted by the National Assembly from Section 22 of the constitution.
“Therefore, this visit is not out of order,” he said.
Apart from the request for the financial cost implications of the proposed name change, the committee also asked the university to provide the IGR profile from 2005 to 2001, detailing the sources and the breakdown of the disbursements, particularly as regards each project executed.”
