The casualties in last Thursday’s tanker fire in Ala-Okogbe, Rivers State has risen to 124, the Federal Road Safety Commission said on Monday.
Ninety-five corpses were reportedly picked from the spot where a tanker and two other vehicles were involved in an accident on the East-West Road.
A statement by the Sector Commander in Rivers State, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, said that as at noon on Monday, July 16, 2012, the record of deaths collated on the basis of additional deaths had risen to 124.
“We are still battling with the actual injury figures, as a lot of victims were transferred from one hospital to the other, which could result in multiple counting.
“Some victims initially went home for traditional treatment while others headed for some private clinics. “We will work with other agencies and the Rivers State Government to collate the actual figures.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace. We also wish those injured quick recovery,” the statement reads in part.
