A renowned Tijjaniyya sect cleric in Gombe State, Sheikh Mohammad Lawal Maiguduma, has threatened to sue the Federal Government over what he described as his unjustifiable detention as well as that of his followers.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after his release from detention at the weekend, the cleric blamed the leadership of the Jama’atul izalatul bid’ah (JIBWIS) for his arrest while preaching in Jos.
He said the detention which was premised on suspicion of terrorism has defamed his character, hence his decision to seek legal redress. The cleric, who said he had evidence linking JIBWIS to his travails, urged the state government to intervene between the two sects to avert a possible crisis.
Responding, the Gombe State chairman of JIBWIS Sheikh Salisu Mohammed, said his sect does not believe in harming anyone even non Muslims, let alone a fellow Muslim. He maintained that the sect was not behind Sheikh Maiguduma’s arrest.
