Dwayne Matthews of Willenhall, England, woke to find the 14kg snake attempting to make a lunge at his friend. Matthews reportedly bought the snake when drunk from a gypsy with the intent to sell and make a profit to fund a guttering business.
Mitigator Richard Baker said: "He apprehended the snake. He ran upstairs, got a quilt and threw it over the snake to subdue it and put it back in the tank. It was like a sub-plot from a Guy Ritchie film."
However, when he took the snake to a local reptile shop, he was soon accused of receiving stolen goods. Police later found that the snake, named Bruce, was one of nine reptiles stolen from David Chance. Matthews has been given an eight-week prison sentence suspended for two years, ordered to pay £165 and have eight weeks' supervision.
