Unidentified gunmen yesterday morning attacked a police vehicle along Gashua road and killed a woman cleaner attached to the police headquarters of the state police command.
Daily Trust gathered that the incident took place at around 7am when the gunmen opened fire on the moving police vehicle conveying its staff to office “The gunmen fired several gunshots on the vehicle; we all scampered for safety. Although the driver tried to escape but I suspected this will cause the death of many because they were many in the vehicle” a witness said.
JTF commander for the state, Colonel Dahiru Abdulsalam, confirmed the attack, saying “it was a police vehicle that was attacked. He asked our reporter to contact the police for details of the incident.
Contacted, Yobe State Police Commissioner, Patrick Egbuniwe, told our correspondent that, “the vehicle was conveying our staff to office around 7am when the attackers fired at them; they killed a lady and shot another boy who is now receiving treatment in a hospital.
The incident, according to findings, caused chaos in the town as ministries, banks and other government buildings were left under lock and key. Civil servants, it was also observed, refused to show up in their work places.
Markets, shops and other business places on the major streets were all shut as people deserted all the places, it was observed. Police were seen forcing residents and passing vehicles to park and lay down at checkpoints along Gashua road, just as an air force helicopter was seen hovering around.
