The police on Monday arraigned an acclaimed pastor, Ikechukwu Olekanma, of Kado, Abuja before a Wuse Zone 2, Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a bunch of bank keys.

Olekanma is standing trial on a one-count charge of theft. The Prosecutor, Mr Abdullahi Adamu, told the court that the matter was lodged at the Wuse police station on March 22 by one Daniel Edibo.

Adamu said that Edibo, who works as a security guard at the Skye Bank, Wuse branch, allegedly caught Olekanma stealing a polythene bag from a customer's locker at the entrance of the bank premises.

He said, “Olekanma entered the bank’s premises, used a bunch of keys, opened the locker and removed a polythene bag containing a bunch of keys.” Adamu said that the key to the main gate of the bank was on the bunch of keys in the polythene bag.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Penal Code. Section 287: stipulates that whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or both.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs Chinyere Nwecheonwu, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum.

Nwecheonwu ordered that the surety must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 09. She said that the surety’s official and residential addresses must be verified by the prosecutor and officials of the court. Nwecheonwu adjourned the matter to April 22 for hearing. (NAN)
