Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State on Sunday travelled out of the country to the United States to confer with the family of the late novelist, Prof. Chinua Achebe.
According to the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, on Sunday, the governor would discuss Achebe’s burial programme with the family.
Obaze said the personal interest the governor was displaying was in the spirit of the state government’s policy of celebrating the citizens of Anambra State that had excelled in their respective fields of endeavour.
The SSG said the Deputy Governor had directed that a condolence register for Achebe be opened at the Conference Hall of the Government House and the Anambra State liaison offices in Abuja and Lagos.
Obaze said the register would offer opportunities to Nigerians to sign their condolences for a man regarded as one of the finest minds the world has known.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has extolled the virtues of the late literary icon, describing him as a strong advocate of a better and greater Nigeria.
Dickson, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, on Sunday, rued the death of Achebe and commiserated with the government and people of Anambra State including the family of the late novelist.
He eulogised him for his towering legacies and accomplishments in the literary world, describing him as an activist.
He said, “His qualities, which had inevitably endeared him to both Nigerians and other nationals will ever remain green in the minds of all.”
