The police at Zuba division shot dead a suspected armed robber during a shootout along the Zuba-Anagada-Giri road in Abuja in the early hours of yesterday.
A police source said the robber, suspected to be a member of a gang responsible for raping women and robbing residents in the area, engaged the police officers in a shootout which left one of the hoodlums escaping with bullet wounds.
The source said on the said morning, the police led by the Divisional Police Officer went on an anti-robbery patrol in an unmarked vehicle during which they ran into the robbers who had blocked the road to rob people plying it.
“The police didn’t use a police van so the armed robbers did not know that we were police officers. They stopped our car and demanded that we alight or be shot dead.
“They were carrying guns and machetes and they pointed gun at one of the police officers and shot at him. This led to an instant cross firing, some of the armed robbers escaped with bullet wounds while one died. He was confirmed dead at Gwagwalada teaching hospital,” the source said.
He further revealed that the Zuba police division had in the past received distress calls from women, who were raped and residents who have been robbed at gun point by groups of armed robbers.
When contacted, the Zuba Divisional Police Officer, Chief Superintendent Femi Adelegan, confirmed the incident and stated that the robbers have been on their list for some weeks for allegedly raping women and maiming residents. He added that they also made life unbearable for motorists along Anagada-Giri road. He maintained that the police will stop at nothing in tracking down the other suspected robbers, who escaped.
FCT police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, confirmed the story, saying efforts were on to arrest other fleeing robbers.
