Man, 36, Jailed Seven Years For Stealing Baby

A 36-year-old man, Akinsoji Goyea, was on Thursday sentenced to seven years imprisonment for kidnapping an 11 month old baby in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The Ogun State High Court sitting in Isabo handed the sentence to Mr. Goyea without an option of fine.

The prosecutor, Abiodun Olurebi, told the court that the matter was reported to him on August 24, 2010.

Mr. Olurebi said investigations have shown that the suspect stole the baby belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Moshood Lawal of 4, Ajegunle Street in Abeokuta.

The police officer said the suspect admitted to have stolen the baby.

“He (Mr. Goyea) claimed to have taken the baby away in his arm before putting him in a sack through the window while his parents were in the sitting room,” the prosecutor told the court.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused admitted that “the baby died due to suffocation when he was taking to him to Lagos to sell to a standby buyer”.

According to the prosecutor, “Mr. Goyea also said in his statement that he took remains of the baby to one Baba Vero in Ikoyi, who had told him he needed blood of a baby for ritual purpose”.

“He told us that he took the baby to Baba Vero in an uncompleted building in Ikoyi area of Lagos. And that he was only paid N40, 000 out of the N300, 000 agreed upon,” the prosecutor told the court.

The prosecuting counsel, Omolori Osinbajo, who called other witnesses, including the parents of the victim, tendered series of evidences, and the statement made by the suspects, to the court.

Mr. Osinbajo argued that evidences before the court were enough to jail the suspect.

She urged the court to proclaim him guilty of the offences which according to her negates Section 364 (2) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The suspect told the court that he did not need any legal representation and is guilty as charged.

The presiding judge handed him a jail term of seven years.
