British No 2 Laura Robson progressed to the second round of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami after a 6-2 4-6 6-3 victory over Camila Giorgi.
Robson went into the clash on the back of three straight opening-round losses but this time managed to grind out her first win since the Australian Open.
The 19-year-old made a fast start, breaking three times as she raced into a 5-1 lead, but her Italian opponent eventually worked her way into the contest and set up a deciding set.
But Robson held her nerve and eventually came out on top after a back-and-fourth contest which featured 14 breaks of serve.
Robson will face French player Alize Cornet, who as the 32nd seed received a bye in the first round.
Elsewhere in opening-round action, former Wimbledon semi-finalists Sabine Lisicki and Tsvetana Pironkova were both eliminated after slumping to defeats against Simona Halep and Daniela Hantuchova respectively.
There were no such problems for two-time grand slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, who saw off Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-3 6-3.
