Nigerian Hangs Onto Balcony Railing to Evade Arrest In Malaysia

Malacca, Malaysia -- A Nigerian hung onto the railing of a balcony at an apartment in Taman Mutiara, Batu Berendam for almost an hour to evade arrest by the state Immigration Department.

Two other countrymen of the 42-year-old managed to escape through the balcony of the fifth floor unit during the raid.

The Department's assistant director said the man earlier attempted to escape through the same route but enforcement officers were stationed on the ground floor.

"We spoke to the man for over an hour and persuaded him to give up," said the assistant director, adding that five Nigerian men and a Thai woman were also detained in two separate units at the same apartment.

Along with other illegal immigrants, they are being investigated for overstaying and not possessing valid permits.

All the foreigners were brought to the Immigration Detention Centre.
