A mobile policeman identified as Corporal Monday Atiga was hit by a motorist while attempting to cross the ever busy Nicon Junction also known as Maitama Junction in Abuja.
According to reports, the victim died on the spot after one of his legs was completely cut off in addition to severe injuries he sustained on his head.
Mary William who witnessed the event said she had crossed the road ahead of the victim when she heard a noise coming from a car as the driver suddenly applied his brakes. “The next thing I saw was his lifeless body with his leg separated from his body,’’ she said.
Another witness, Hamisu Tukur, said he was driving behind the car that hit the policeman, adding that the victim had trekked almost half of the road, but decided to move back after realizing that another motorist was coming on high speed and refused to slow down for him to cross.
“It was at that moment that he was hit by a motorist, who was already close to the spot,’’ he said.
According to the driver of the ill-fated car, Bello Abdulmalik, he almost hit a street light while attempting to dodge the accident. “But the man had already come over my way, that was how I hit him.Some people said he was drunk, but I cannot confirm that because I did not go close to him,’’ he said.
The driver of the vehicle was said to be heading towards Mabushi from Kubwa axis.The incident was confirmed by a police traffic officer with Mabushi Police Divison, Assistant Superintendent Nicholas Kulia, who identified the victim.
The officer led other policemen to the spot to control the traffic jam which ensued as a result of the accident.
The remains of the victim were taken to Maitama hospital morgue by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) while the driver and his car were taken to Mabushi police division.
