A 45-year-old man businessman, Fred Olise, was sentenced on Monday to four years imprisonment without an option of fine by an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court.
Out of the five counts filed against him, Fred Olise was found guilty on two counts of obtaining money from one James Ugbo under false pretences. The prosecutor, Inspector Samson Ekikere, had said in March 2009 at Ikorodu, Olise and others at large obtained the sum of N450,000 from Ugbo on the pretext that they would procure genuine Switzerland visa for him. He said, however, that neither was the visa given, nor the money refunded to Ugbo. Ekikere said.
“In addition, the defendant also collected the sum of N160,000 from Ugbo to buy plane ticket to Switzerland. The purchase was never done and Ugbo was not refunded the money.
Olise has contravened Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap. C 17 Volume Two of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.”
The presiding magistrate Mrs. Oshodi Makanju said she found Olise guilty on both counts. She said, “I hereby sentence you to two years each for both charges without an option of fine. The terms will be served concurrently with hard labour.
"The court also demand that Mr. Olise must make restitution and repay all the money, N610,000 to Mr. Ugbo.”
