8 people, 5 minors among them, were killed by gunmen in an attack at a rural area near Mexico’s Pacific resort of Acapulco, local authorities reported.
The bodies of the victims, who were between 12 and 25 years old, were found on Thursday in a field in the town of Coyuca de Benitez, said local police chief Honorio Salinas. They were fatally shot, some with bullet wounds to the head.
Six of the victims died on the spot while two succumbed to their wounds while being treated, a public safety official for the southern state of Guerrero said. “We have eight unidentified people who were killed, but there are minors,” the official said.
The assault came four days after 17 people were kidnapped from their homes in the municipality of Cocula, in northern Guerrero. Guerrero, one of the poorest states in Mexico, has been beset by drug-related violence, prompting communities to form vigilante groups to defend themselves.
