Police in Delta State, yesterday, stormed the hideout of a kidnap gang and seized eight suspected kidnappers.
DeltaState Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, who confirmed the development in an interview with Vanguard gave the names of the arrested suspects as Isah Useni, Anthony Ofulue Onyeisi, Moses Peter, Isah Mustapha, Monday Ndam, Friday Rimzuam, Victor Izegbune and Ubaka Godwin.
He said the suspects were undergoing interrogation and had confessed to the kidnap of the wife of a retired permanent secretary and one Mr. Ibe Chibuzor, all in Ogwashi-Uku.
A police source privy to the raid on the suspected kidnappers told Vanguard, “one of the kidnap victims managed to escape from their hideout, which is between Ogwashi-Uku and Ubulu-Uku and he gave the police detailed information of the location.”
He said, “Acting of the tip –off, the police invaded the hideout and arrested the suspects. It was under interrogation we also found out they were the gang that abducted the wife of the retired permanent secretary”.
Although the CP did give the specifics of how the police arrested the suspected kidnappers, but he corroborated our finding that a victim, who escaped from the kidnappers’ den volunteered information to the police.
He, however, said he was sad that the family of the retired permanent secretary, whose matriarch was abducted on her way to Ogwashi-Uku went behind the police to pay ransom to the gang.
“Initially when she was kidnapped, the family was cooperating with us and giving us information, but suddenly, they stopped, probably because the gangsters threatened them and I believe they paid ransom and the woman was released.
“That was how we lost track of the gang then, but thank God, we got a lead again through a victim that escaped”.
We went in and picked them. All we need from Deltans is information, they should not panic, they should report their contact with kidnappers to the nearest police station and we will take it up from there,” he said.
The police chief asserted, “One thing I have observed in the spate of kidnapping in the state is the insider factor. Insiders, family members are involved, they are the ones that usually urge others to pay ransom and not cooperate with the police. And later, they will go and share the ransom”.
