Six Months in Prison for Stealing N6,000 Phone

A 28-year-old man, Lucky Matthew, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment for stealing a Nokia phone worth N6,000.

The verdict was passed at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, after Matthew pleaded guilty to three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. Olufunke Hamzat, sentenced Matthew without an option of fine. She said, “You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment without an option of fine for pleading guilty to the charges against you.”

However, Matthew’s accomplice in the crime, Chigozie Udeh, 26, pleaded not guilty. Matthew and Udeh were neighbours in Agege.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, the defendants broke into one Obinna Williams home at Okeho Street, Dopemu, Agege. They committed the crime at about 3.00am on June 23. Unuigbe said they made away with the Nokia phone.

Unuigbe said the offences committed contravened Sections 285, 404, and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

However, the magistrate granted Udeh bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned Udeh’s case till July 15.
