The Commissioner for Health in Bayelsa State, Dr. Anapurere Awoli, on Wednesday asked the state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, to declare a state of emergency in the health sector.
The commissioner, who is also the Chairman of the Health Committee, spoke at the Government House, Yenagoa, when members of the committee submitted their report to the governor.
He stressed that declaration of the state of emergency was necessary to tackle numerous challenges facing the sector.
He said there was the need for human capacity training, development of the cardiology department and financing of the sector through a health insurance scheme.
But the governor said his administration had set aside N500m to begin a health insurance scheme in the state.
He said the scheme would cover all civil servants in the state, adding that the government was passionate about the project.
