Reps Seek Reconstruction Of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

House of Representatives on Thursday asked the Federal Ministry of Works to reconstruct the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The sponsor of a motion on “urgent intervention in the reconstruction” of the road, Mr. Solomon Olamilekan, said the road was a major economic and trade route between Lagos and Ogun states “and the entire South-West”.

He said the road was about to collapse due to years of neglect by the Federal Government.

Olamilekan added, “This very important federal road is on the verge of collapse, thereby causing accidents and daily loss of lives and property.

“Again, the economic and social activities of the people and communities along this road have continued to suffer due to the bad condition of the road.

“Armed robbers have continued to cause mayhem daily at the failed portions of the road, thereby causing untold hardship to the citizenry.”

The Action Congress of Nigeria lawmaker from Lagos State called on the Federal Government to pay adequate attention to the road “as the protection of lives and property is central on the responsibilities of a responsive and people-oriented government”.

The House did not debate the motion, as members unanimously endorsed it.

Meanwhile, Oyo State House of Assembly has resolved to collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Corps to curb road accidents in the state.

Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu, stated this on Thursday while receiving the Sector Commander in the state, Mr. Ogaga Oghene, who visited the House.

Sunmonu, who said FRSC had performed well in reducing auto crashes in the state, however urged its officials to continnue to work harder.

According to her, many of road accidents are caused by human error.

She said with renewed effort and enlightenment, accident rate would still reduce in the state.

She said, “The lawmakers are ready to give the command desired support. Safety of life and property is of paramount importance.”

Earlier, Oghene said the command had started recording lower rate of road accidents in the state.
