The family of 70 year old Rebecca Adewumi, who was allegedly beaten to death by youths in Omuo Ekiti in Ekiti State over witchcraft, has rejected result of the autopsy conducted by pathologists at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital on the remains of the deceased, describing it as a sham.
Spokesman of the family, Mr. Gabriel Omokanju, who addressed newsmen, also raised an alarm that he and other members of the family have been receiving threat messages from some members of the community since the police invited the traditional ruler, Oba Noah Omonigbehin, for interrogation over the case. Omokanju, who claimed that he was present when the autopsy was conducted, said the family has no confidence in those that performed the exercise.
He maintained that the claim by doctors that the woman died as a result of foot ulcer, an injury, which according to him she had for over two decades before her death, was an attempt to commute the case from murder to manslaughter. They also claimed that there was no mutilation on her fingers as we had earlier alleged.
Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the command, Mr. Victor Nosa Ojo, confirmed that an autopsy had been conducted, but that the report had not yet been made public. He added that the police were still investigating the matter, and that nobody has been arrested.
