Aviation Analyst Commends Air Traffic Controller For “Professional Courage”

An Aviation Analyst, Charles Aligbe, has commended an unnamed air traffic controller in Benin, who exhibited “professional courage” in calling back a commercial plane boarded by the governor, to the airport for flouting aviation rules.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state as well as some of his aides were on their way from Government House, Benin to Awka, Anambra State in a chartered OAS helicopter for the burial of Mrs. Collette Obi, the wife of the Special Adviser to the President on Inter-Party Affairs, Senator Ben Obi when the aircraft was recalled to Benin Airport.

The flight which had taken off was called back to the airport because the pilot, Capt. James Manahash, did not pay aerodrome and landing fees and also did not file a passengers’ manifest.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily he applauded the air traffic controller for having the courage to insist on due progress despite the fact that a governor was involved in the situation.

He blamed the pilot for the issue and said the “air traffic controller in Benin should be commended for courage because he exhibited professional courage by insisting that what should be done, should be done”.

Amaechi’s grounded aircraft

He disclosed that the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal’s aircraft was also at the Akure airport at the time Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s plane was grounded.

Arguing that it is important for every pilot to present the manifesto of the passengers on board, he said that Governor Amaechi’s pilot did not do follow the right procedure, just like Governor Oshiomole’s pilot.

He presented the manifestoes of Tambuwal and Amaechi’s aircrafts which showed that the pilot carrying the speaker did the proper thing by typing the manifesto (including the names of all passengers) and sending it to the appropriate authority while Amaechi’s pilot did not indicate the names of his passengers.

Presenting Amaechi’s manifest, he said the names of passengers was written as “governor and others”.

He said people should separate the politics and check if people are doing the appropriate thing.
