Igbo Leaders Wade Into Ladipo Market Crisis

In an effort to restore peace to the popular Aguiyi - Ironsi International Market, Ladipo, leaders of Igbo people in Lagos State have intervened in the lingering crisis rocking the market.

The international auto spare parts market has been enmeshed in a leadership tussle for a long time. The President-General of the market, Mr. Jonathan Okoli is currently facing trial before a Lagos High Court for attempted murder during one of the crisis in the market.

President-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo of Lagos State and the Diaspora, Chief Oliver Akubueze, during a meeting at Mushin Local Government secretariat, said that their intervention became necessary because of the disturbing news from the market. Akubueze sued for understanding, urging all the traders, stakeholders and the local council to live in peace and interact with one another.

He said: "This meeting is a fact-finding mission to know the truth about the status of the market. We are disturbed by the news from the market. We are urging all the factional groups to sheathe their swords in the interest of peace in the market."

Chairman, Mushin LG, Mr. Babatunde Adepitan, commended the leaders for taking the bull by the horns towards finding an amicable solution to the problem. He said the information going round that the Yoruba were trying to seize the market from the Igbo was mere propaganda.

Adepitan said: "Every market, be it international, state or local, is constitutionally managed and controlled by the local governments. This is an inherited crisis. This crisis came about because of the cracks in the family that manages the market. Today, the family is united and indivisible."

Chief Ebere Ubani, the President of the Igbo speaking community in Lagos State, said the involvement of the elders was meant to foster peace, love, and unity among the traders. Special Adviser to Anambra State Governor on Liaison Matters, Mrs. Ochioma Chukwuma, called on the traders to cooperate fully with the LG, especially as regards internally-generated revenue
