British Police Arrests 6 Terrorist Suspects 4 years ago 12

The British security operatives have arrested six people on suspicion of terrorism offences, but police said they were not related to the Olympic Games, which start later this month. Agency reports indicated that five men and one woman were held “on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

One 24-year-old man was shot with a Taser stun gun during the arrest but did not need to go to hospital, police said, adding that searches are still being carried out at eight addresses in London. Scotland Yard declined to give more details but British media reported that the arrests related to a possible plot involving Islamist extremists with potential targets in Britain. Some of those arrested were reported to be British nationals.

Scotland Yard said the arrests were not related to the London Olympic Games, which get under way on July 27. A few hours after the arrests, part of the M6 motorway in Staffordshire, central England, was closed temporarily amid unconfirmed media reports that a man was seen pouring liquid into a smoking bag on board a coach. The 48 passengers were evacuated from the coach while armed officers were sent to the scene.

But Staffordshire Police later said it was a false alarm, caused by a passenger using an electronic cigarette, which produces visible vapour. “We can now confirm that whilst this was a genuine security alert, the significant concerns reported to us were unfounded,” said Superintendent David Holdway.
