Alan Dzagoev, who starred for Russia at Euro 2012, will be playing for their Under-21s at next month's European U21 Championship.

The CSKA Moscow attacking midfielder was one of six players who shared the Golden Boot at in the tournament in Poland and Ukraine last summer.

Dzagoev is just 22 years old but already has 27 senior caps to his name. His inclusion for the U21 Euro - at the expense of an appearance in Russia's crucial World Cup qualifier away to Portugal next month - will be seen as a huge boost to the chances of Nikolai Pisarev's youngsters in Israel.

Among the other players with senior caps who have made the 23-man U21 squad are Dynamo Moscow winger Aleksandr Kokorin, highly-rated Real Madrid forward Denis Cheryshev, and winger Fyodor Smolov, who has been on loan at Anzhi Makhachkala from Dynamo Moscow and scored seven goals in 10 appearances in qualifying.

Defenders: Maksim Belyayev (Rostov), Taras Burlak (Lokomotiv Moscow), Ivan Knyazev (Torpedo Moscow), Ibragim Tsallagov (Krylia Sovetov Samara), Nikita Chicherin (Dynamo Moscow), Georgi Schennikov (CSKA Moscow).

Midfielders: Shota Bibilov (Volga Nizhny Novgorod), Sergei Bryzgalov (Spartak Moscow), Maksim Grigoryev (Lokomotiv Moscow), Alan Dzagoev (CSKA Moscow), Roman Yemelyanov (Illichivets Mariupol), Aleksandr Zotov (Tom Tomsk), Yuri Kirillov (Dynamo Moscow), Sergei Petrov (FC Krasnodar), Denis Cheryshev (Real Madrid), Oleg Shatov (Anzhi Makhachkala).
