Cultists Kill Policeman In Calabar

Unidentified cultists on Monday killed a Police Inspector, identified as Mathew, at the Eight Mile area of Calabar metropolis in Cross River State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. John Umoh, who confirmed the incident, said the matter was under investigation.

However, he said no one had yet been arrested in connection with the incident.

It was gathered that Mathew had left his room, where he lived at Zion Street along Eight Miles, to ease himself at about 2am when he ran into some of the suspected cultists, who were just passing by.

According to eyewitnesses, the policeman pointed his torch at them and this annoyed them, as they queried why he should do so.

The source, who craved anonymity said, “They were asking the man why he should point his torch at them. He did not have any quarrel with them. After that, he just went back into his room to sleep and not even thinking anything.

“He did not even quarrel with them. After about 10 minutes, they mobilised themselves to a large number over 20 and came back and attacked him in his house with machetes and left him dead. We have no idea which cult group it was, but we know they were cultists.”

A resident of Eight Miles, Mr. Jonah Etim, said they had been living in fear for some time.

Meanwhile, some unknown gunmen have abducted a 60-year-old wife of a retired Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Anne Ziwariote.

Our correspondent gathered that Ziwariote was kidnapped shortly after another gang of gunmen in a separate attack injured Mrs. Vivian Benson, the wife of the Special Assistant on Radio to the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Ekior Benson.

Confirming the attack on his wife, Benson said the matter had been officially reported to the police.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he had yet to receive details of the incidents.
