The police have said the road blocks in many parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were meant to secure the public, noting that the blockage will remain until the security situation in the country improves.
It stated that the cordon on the major roads in Abuja, which is causing traffic logjams, would not be removed until the public is safe.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, Suleiman Abba, stated this Wednesday in response to a question during a study tour of police facilities by the National Defence College Course 21 officers in Abuja.
The AIG explained that on assumption of office as AIG Zone 7 in March 2012, he ordered the removal of the cordon on Sultan Dasuki Road and other roads in Wuse area of the city, when he observed that the security situation had improved.
Abba said that the bomb scare recorded in Abuja indicated that the members of the public are now security-conscious, insisting that the police did not find any explosive in the package that was said to have been discovered at the Area 10 post office.
He said: "The cordons are meant to protect the public; we will continue to assess the situation and reduce the cordon as we make progress. When I resumed office as AIG Zone 7, the road leading to my office and others around the area were blocked, but some of the roads have been opened to motorists now."
The AIG stated that the Course 21 officers comprising 131 senior military officers, senior police officers, para-military and core civil service officers and directing staff would be exposed to Nigeria Police Zone 7 organisation, mission, tasks, operational readiness and equipment.
He added that the experience would enrich the officers on issues affecting the security of the FCT, Niger and Kaduna States and boost the inter-service collaboration between the police and the military.
The Course 21 team leader, M.T. Agholor stated that the participants had visited Nigeria Navy logistics command, Nigerian Air Force Training Command and 1 Division, Kaduna, where they were exposed to the security structure and architecture of the services.
