Marseille player Joey Barton has decided to retire from international football.
The midfielder follows the footsteps of Rio Ferdinand who retired from international football last week.
‘Decided to announce my international retirement as well. I was honoured to represent my country for such a long, illustrious time. #sadtimes’ he announced on Twitter. "Decided to focus on being fit at club level. Hope everyone understands".
Joey Barton says he is now focused on playing football at the highest level.
"I’m 30 years old. I’m not interested in money. I just want to test myself in the best club competition in the world against the best players. Can anyone blame me for that? Is that out of order on my part?"
