Session to work out political consensus on nation’s security challenges in Uyo.

Worried about growing insecurity and the emergency situation in the country, prominent Nigerians, including some current leaders of government are convening an emergency national summit to work out political consensus on how to arrest the security challenges.


The summit, according to the National Summit Planning Committee, NSPC, on Tuesday, will “fashion out consensus on the modality for a nationwide consultations and negotiations, while assessing issues of amnesty for militants as well as latest emergency rule imposed by the Federal Government on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States.”


The statement, signed by the Secretary of NSPC, Modupe Odubanjo, on behalf of the national parley, whose arrow head is Maitama Sule, a leader of the Northern Elders Forum, NEF, noted that the summit will hold al Le’ Meridien Hotels and Resorts, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, from June 25 to 27.


The statement listed those that have already been invited to convene various sessions of the emergency national summit as the leader of The Patriots, Ben Nwabueze; leader of the Northern Political Leaders Forum, NPLF, Adamu Ciroma; a former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Emeka Anyaokwu; Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka; and a former Defence Minister, Theophilus Danjuma.


Others are Second Republic Vice President, Alex Ekwueme; First National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Solomon Lar; Ijaw Leader and former Federal Commissioner for Information, Edwin Clark; a chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Audu Ogbeh; a former Chief of Army Staff, Alani Akinrinade; a former Presidential Candidate of AD/APP, Olu Falae; and a northern leader, Junaid Mohammed.


Others are a former Kaduna State Governor, Balarabe Musa; National Chairman of the defunct National Advance Party, NAP, Tunij Braithwaite; President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Abdulwaheed Omar; National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mohammed Garba; former President of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Olisa Agbakoba; a former President of National Council of Women Society, NCWS, Ramatu Usman; prominent lawyer, Femi Falana; and a former presidential candidate, Pat Utomi.


According to a draft programme released by the Citizens Advocacy Group, the Summit organizers, President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to deliver a keynote address at the event, which is expected to be attended by Governors of the three troubled states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.


The statement added, “The (three) governors will be joined by Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos, Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano State, Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers, Comrade Adams Oshiomohole of Edo State, Seriake Dickson of Balyesa, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nassarawa, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina state, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, Jonah Jang of Plateau as well as the host Governor, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, among others.


The group also said the Senate President, David Mark, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, will deliver goodwill messages at the summit while all former Presidents and Heads of States of Nigeria as well as senior members of Project Nigeria, Labour movement, civil and political society in the country have been invited to the historic event.
