Trainer Jet Overshoots Benin Airport Runway 4 years ago 0

Two persons escaped death on Thursday when a Nigerian Air Force trainer jet overshot the runway of the Benin Airport in Benin, Edo State. The duo were trying to land at the airport at 10.30a.m when the landing gear failed to descend on time.

A source at the airport said the aircraft, with registration number 5N-BKS, had two pilots on board and was on routine flight.

“The plane landed on the runway with its tyres locked in, an indication that the tyres did not shoot out. “But only the pilot can really explain what happened,” the source said.

The source said an airport rescue team led by the Commanding Officer, Air Maritime Operations, responded promptly with the emergency team. Some people at the airport said the incident caused delays in flight operations for some hours.

The occupants were, however, not injured while the damaged aircraft was towed to the Okada Air hangar at the airport.

The Benin Airport Manager, Segun Ayodele, confirmed the incident. It came a little over a month after a Dana Air plane on a scheduled flight from Abuja to Lagos crashed into four buildings on June 3 in Iju Ishaga, Lagos, killing 153 persons on board and four others on the ground. Home Page
