Jonathan and His 'Americanism'

Jonathan and His 'Americanism'

President Goodluck Jonathan surprised many people during his last media chat when he said that he would not declare his asset publicly even if the media made the issue the national anthem.

For someone who many admired for his perceived humility, his choice of words (I don’t give a damn about public declaration of assets) rather portrayed him as the head of a military junta rather than a democratic government.

Perhaps, the President’s ‘Americanism’ was informed by the criticism that he was too mild in his approach to governance. Many residents now believe that the presidential chat may not be an English class, but Jonathan does not need to be told that such words are not ideal on national television. That the anti-corruption campaign is a major plank of the transformation agenda is another issue here.
