A Professor of Political Science, Femi Otubanjo has said that the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan was long overdue and the right step in dealing with the growing insecurity in northern Nigeria.
While speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show Sunrise Daily, Mr Otubanjo said the north eastern part of the country especially Borno and Yobe states were beginning to regress into anarchy and something had to be done about it.
He said that initially amnesty would have been the solution to the insurgence and ensuring that they are accommodated within the system “it appears that talking bout amnesty spur them into greater and bloodier violence”.
He said government has tried in responding because of the people suffering in the affected states.
He said, “it seems that the insurgence where beginning to think that the government was weak and so they decided to up their antics and the government also had to respond.”
