The vaccinators went for the usual house to house polio vaccination when they were attacked.

Details surrounding their deaths are still sketchy.

Attempts by reporters to reach the police proved abortive as the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command did not respond to phone calls. Nigeria, particularly northern states, is one of the few countries still suffering from polio.

UPDATE:One of the survivors, Miss Hadiza Abubakar, whose shoulder was pierced by a bullet from the several gunshots fired into the female vaccination collection centre of the Kauyen Alu Clinic, said that, judging by the operation of the gunmen, the women health workers were their specific target.

The 23-year-old further revealed that the gunmen spoke a mixed accent of foreign Hausa and French. According to her, when the victims heard the gunshots, they ran under the collection tables to hide but the gunmen stormed the office and opened fire on them.

Hadiza, who is now receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the Kano metropolis, according to family sources, is set to wed next month.

Another survivor, Mallam Abba Dan Mai Unguwa, said that the invaders came on four motorcycles and fired several shots into the air to cause panic in the area before proceeding to attack the clinic.

Unguwa said two of the gunmen entered into the male collection centre and asked them “all out” before firing at the vaccines and setting the centre ablaze. A female vaccinator, who was at the male section of the building, was shot while the male health workers were untouched.

But another source said that the bandits came in a tricycle popularly known as “A daidaita sahu”. The gunmen killed eight female and one male health officials who were on the mandatory polio immunisation exercise.

The gunmen also struck in the Hotoro area of Tarauni local government area of the state. Two women were killed in the attack on Kauyen Alu while six women and a man were killed in the second attack.
