Gunmen have kidnapped the Parish Priest of St Paul’s Anglican Church, Umunachi, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Rev. James Achigbu.
Another set of gunmen also kidnapped the wife of the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Dr. Emmanuel Ekwesianya.
While Achigbu was kidnapped along Umunachi – Eziowelle road at about 8pm on Monday on his way home, the wife of the NMA chairman was abducted at about 7.30am on Tuesday as she was about to drive her children to school in Ihiala.
The archdeacon in charge of Ogidi Archdeaconry, Ven. Obi Ubaka, said Achigbu was with his wife, Uju, at the time of the incident.
“Rev Achigbu and his wife were returning home in their Honda Accord, after visiting St. John’s Church, Eziowele. The kidnappers blocked them along the Umunachi –Eziowele road, and forced him into their vehicle.
“One of the kidnappers forced his wife out of the Honda car and drove behind her husband’s abductors,” he said.
Ubaka said since then the kidnappers had been demanding a ransom from the church. But he said the church had consistently been telling them that it would not be involved in such a transaction, appealing to the kidnappers to release the priest.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the incident, saying that the police were on top of the situation.
However, the kidnappers of the NMA chairman’s wife have demanded a ransom of N50m.
Ekwesianya’s kidnappers forced her into her Sport Utility Van, as she opened the gate to their house to take her children to school. The kidnappers took her away, leaving the children stranded.
