Squash Trials Kick Off In Minna

The Nigeria Squash Federation on Tuesday said that it has commenced preparation for the forthcoming Africa Senior Squash Championships billed for Windhoek, Namibia, on Feb. 19 to Feb. 23.

The NSF’s outgoing Secretary, Evelyn Fabunmi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the body had since commenced a closed camp in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The country’s selected players for the championship at Windhoek will depart for Namibia on Feb. 17, in the buildup to the opening ceremony.

“We opened our camp on Sunday with the invited players coming in to vie for spots in the team; we will ensure that we select only the best.

“We are participating in the men’s singles, women’s singles and the doubles events. Our players have shown that they are set to take over Africa,’’ Fabunmi said.

She added that the recent inauguration of the Professional Squash Players Association of Nigeria by the country’s players, to organise competitions for them would also enhance their performance at competitions.

“The fact that the players were able to establish a forum that will organise competitions for them shows that their zeal for the game is unparalleled,’’ Fabunmi said.

NAN recalls that the PSPAN was formed on Nov. 25 in Lagos by some of the country’s professional squash players to organise competitions for them.

The reason for the formation of the association was due to the inability of the NSF to organise competitions on a regular basis for squash players.

It was against this backdrop that the body organised its maiden competition at the Apapa Club on Jan. 27.
