There was tension yesterday in Suleja town of Niger State following shooting to death a member of Shiite Islamic sect by soldiers during the sect’s peaceful procession along old UBA Road on Sunday.
It was learnt that the deceased identified as Musa Abubakar was said to have been shot dead by the soldiers after an altercation that ensued when the sect members insisted that the soldiers’ vehicle must stop like all other vehicles for their procession to pass.
Daily Trust gathered that the sect’s action was said to have prompted the soldiers who were on patrol to alight from their vehicle and shoot sporadically in the air and in the process a stray bullet hit and killed the Shiite member.
Suleja leader of the sect Hassan Adamu alleged that one of the soldiers from the patrol vehicle shot one of their members, saying the man died in Suleja General Hospital hours later.
He said Abubakar was killed while they were on a peaceful procession around IBB Market of the town where he said the sect had been conducting in the town for the past 15 years.
“The soldiers jumped back into their vehicle after the shootings leaving one of our members dead and quickly drove away”, he said.
Niger police spokesman ASP Richard Oguche confirmed the incident.
